Our painting courses cover a wide range of techniques and mediums:
Oil Painting Fundamentals
In our oil painting courses, you’ll learn how to prepare your surface, whether it’s canvas or board. You’ll master a variety of key techniques, including:
- Blending
- Orthodox underpainting techniques
- Alla-prima (direct painting)
- Impasto (thick paint application), including palette knife
- Wet-on-wet
- Glazing (transparent layers)
- Expressive, realistic and all other painting techniques
We’ll also cover essential skills like colour theory, composition, and step-by-step processes to help you create successful oil paintings.
ACRYLICS
Acknowledge acrylics’ fast-drying properties and learn how to control them to achieve your desired effects. Our courses will teach you how to use acrylics as a standalone medium or as a base for oil painting. Acrylics have intense colour ranges which makes it a favourite for modern and abstract work, and is more difficult for realism than oils.
WATERCOLOURS
My watercolour courses are designed for all skill levels. You’ll explore essential techniques like wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry applications, learn how to create texture, and use different mediums. We encourage both detailed work and creative exploration, helping you gain a comprehensive understanding of watercolour and the skills you need to succeed. I use both pan and tube sets.
SCULPTURE
This course focuses on the art of touch, encouraging you to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques. You’ll work with materials such as clay, concrete, plaster, wire, paper, wood, and stone.
You’ll also learn to create a strong inner structure, or armature, to build your work on. Other techniques like carving and assemblage will also be taught, expanding your creative possibilities.
MIXED MEDIA
Mixed media offers a fun and exciting way to add depth to your work by combining wet and dry materials. While we primarily focus on canvas-based projects, you’ll explore a vast array of materials, from soft pastels and coffee to oil paints and encaustic wax.
You can also learn other techniques like assemblage and carving to expand your creative possibilities even further.
PLEASE READ
All these art mediums and forms are fantastic. If however, you need to be good at it you need to at least have a sound knowledge of the foundations of art making. It’s like driving your own car; you need to own one first.
These skills are not just technical; they change how you see the world. I strongly recommend starting with a foundation course to learn and practice these fundamentals, regardless of your experience level.
