What is Expressive Painting?
Expressive painting is a bold and intuitive approach to art that emphasizes painterly effects over strict realism. While it may appear spontaneous or even easy, expressive painting can be more challenging than it seems. One of the biggest hurdles is overcoming our obsession with realism, which often creates a creative barrier that’s hard to cross.
If you’ve ever stood in awe before a painting where the dabs, strokes, and blotches seem chaotic up close but come together to form a stunning image from a distance—you know exactly what expressive painting can do.
Realistic painting is a skill that takes time and effort to master. And once we’ve developed that technical ability, it’s natural to want to hold on tightly to it. But expressive painting asks us to let go—to break, bend, or even abandon some of those hard-earned rules. And in doing so, we discover something new. It’s in this space of freedom and experimentation that personal expression flourishes.
In the end, expressive painting becomes more than just an image—it becomes a reflection of you.
I have created a step-by step plan to help you get this done!!
You’ll learn how to break down complex visual detail into simple, manageable shapes, and how to reduce detail intentionally without losing the essence of your subject. We’ll shift the focus from obsessing over details to understanding values, edges, and expression.
I’ll also show you how to get the most out of your tools—often in ways you might not expect—and how to practice restraint to avoid over-working your painting. Sometimes, knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to begin.
Throughout the process, you’ll develop the habit of constantly evaluating your work as you paint. This ongoing self-assessment helps you stay on track and make confident, intentional choices
